On this date in New Jersey history:

  • 1780: During the American Revolutionary War, the Battle of Connecticut Farms took place in Union Township, New Jersey. British troops raided and burned down the town, leading to a skirmish with local militia forces.

  • 1845: The Rutgers Female Institute, the first women's college in New Jersey, was chartered in Bordentown. It later merged with the New Jersey State Normal School to become the New Jersey College for Women, which is now part of Rutgers University.
