Last-minute weekend beach getaways

Traveling from North/Northwest of NJ? Dive into these coastal destinations:

Sandy Hook
Explore gorgeous beaches and historic sites during a last-minute getaway at Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook. Reserve a campsite in the park (season runs late May through early October) or enjoy boutique accommodations at SeaScape Manor Bed & Breakfast or BeachWalk at Sea Bright. If you don’t mind a short drive (under 30 minutes) to the beach, you could stay at The Oyster Point Hotel on the Navesink River in nearby Red Bank, where shopping, dining and nightlife provide plenty to do.

Book a room in one of the many low-key motels, such as Colony Motel or Luna-Mar Motel, for nearby access to the beach. Larger motels include the Aztec Ocean Resort or Hershey Motel.

Traveling from South/Southwest of NJ? Coast to these cool resort areas:

Long Beach Island (LBI)
This 18-mile-long island is dotted with quaint beach towns, excellent shopping and exciting dining. On the northern end, stay at The North Shore Inn and explore Barnegat Lighthouse State Park during the day. Or stay further south at the family-friendly Engleside Inn or The Boulevard, formerly the Mariner Inn with guest rooms that are comfortably chic. County Commissioners announce
Veterans Resource Fair on Aug. 14

The Monmouth County Board of County Commissioners has announced that the County will host a Veterans Resource Fair from 4-7 p.m. on Aug. 14 at the Wall Township Municipal Building, 2700 Allaire Rd.

“We are thrilled to host the annual Veterans Resource Fair and thank the Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services for coordinating such an important event.,” said Commissioner Director Thomas A. Arnone. “Monmouth County honors and appreciates all those who have served our nation in the armed forces and we want to do everything we can to assist these men and women when they come home.”

There will be more than 20 participating organizations at the Veterans Resource Fair that offer a variety of resources and programs. “Please join us and meet with representatives of agencies including the Brookdale Community College Veterans Center, the Mental Health Association of Monmouth County, the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Monmouth County Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services,” said Commissioner Susan M. Kiley, liaison to the Division on Aging, Disabilities and Veterans Services. “Attendees will also hear presentations from Monmouth County Clerk Christine Giordano Hanlon and representatives from the Veterans Administration New Jersey Health Care System.”

Today in NJ History

The Atlantic City Boardwalk, which is the first boardwalk in the United States, officially opened on July 15, 1870. It was initially built to help hotel owners keep sand out of their lobbies and to provide a designated walkway for visitors along the beach.

The boardwalk quickly became a popular attraction, featuring hotels, shops, and entertainment venues. It played a key role in the development of Atlantic City as a major resort destination. Over the years, the boardwalk has been expanded and rebuilt several times due to damage from storms and natural wear and tear.

The Atlantic City Boardwalk remains an iconic symbol of New Jersey’s shore culture and continues to be a major tourist attraction, offering a variety of activities and attractions, including casinos, amusement parks, and restaurants.
